Sunflowers removed from display for five days

Research into discolouration

During international research conducted in 2011 into the discolouration in Van Gogh’s yellow paint, advanced techniques revealed that this discolouration was associated with changes to the chrome element. These findings prompted the decision to engage in further study of the artist’s masterpiece Sunflowers, with a view to establishing how best to prevent discolouration of the work. From 16 to 20 April the popular painting was therefore absent from its usual place in the museum’s galleries.
