In the top 25 of most visited museums in the world

With 1,600,300 visitors in 2011 the Van Gogh Museum reached 23rd place in the rankings of most visited museums in the world. This fact was reported by the leading monthly newspaper on the visual arts, The Art Newspaper. Director Axel Rüger declared in response to this news: ‘We are proud that the museum appears in this illustrious list with museums such as the Louvre and the Museum of Modern Art, and we are tremendously pleased that our public has such an interest in the Van Gogh Museum’s collection and programme.’

2011 was the Van Gogh Museum’s second most successful year in terms of visitor numbers, with exhibitions such as Picasso in Paris, 1900-1907, Van Gogh in Antwerp and Paris and Snapshot. Painters and Photography 1888-1915 drawing the crowds. The increase in visitors compared with 2010 was considerable: 10.7% more people came to the museum in 2011. The milestone of one million visitors was already reached in August 2011, somewhat earlier than expected. The Van Gogh Museum was also the most visited museum in the Netherlands.
